Mochi was talking about Hermitcraft a bunch (a minecraft group with a bunch of pro minecraft players all playing on the same server and getting up to shenanigans) and it got me curious enough to watch a couple videos; naturally I’ve gravitated towards docm77, this delightful man who is determined to actually break minecraft

aw thank you!! and OH MAN i actually might have something handy for this; I drew this up pretty recently as a ref for some bendy friends on the Relative Proportion Checks I use when drawing humans, feat. scribbles of Sammy and Susie:

if my arcane scribblings are hard to follow, here’s all the checks I’m pointing out:

  • About a face’s width on either side of the head to get the width of shoulders
  • From the top of the head to the base of the pecs/boobs is usually about 2 heads, so you can measure another head length to find that
  • Elbows (when the arm is just hanging straight down) usually line up with the bottom of the ribcage
  • Wrists likewise usually line up with the crotch
  • The length from the wrist to the elbow is about the same as the length of the foot (hold a shoe up to your arm to see this IRL!)
  • The thing I use to measure legs is the length from the base of the neck (about where collarbones are) to the crotch. That should be about equal to the length from the top of the hip to the knees, and then again the length from the top of the knee to the bottom of the foot.

These aren’t strict rules – people come in all sorts of proportions, and it’s not hard to find IRL people with legs that look extra long for their bodies or shoulders that seem narrower than usual. But for me, it’s SO EASY for my hand to default to making people way too unrealistically squished without realising it, or making their heads way too big compared to their bodies, so all these lil measurements are a good way for me to keep proportions roughly consistent while I’m sketching. Even now, a lot of times I will end up sketching it wrong at first, then doing all these checks to correct it as I’m solidifying the sketch.

AAAAA LOOK AT BOO’S COLOURS… IM SO HAPPY WITH HOW THIS TURNED OUT!!

I was just thinkin about how the boys never got a proper introduction (since they’re all Bendy characters) and wanted to give them one… while also nodding to, uh, well, some of the, things that have happened!!! Also to be able to introduce them to friends who are not as familiar with Bendy; honestly I’m still just really delighted by the concept of “CoC game where we all play various employees of a 1930s animation studio.”

so last night I abruptly lost my mind and suddenly decided out of nowhere that I wanted to figure out how to make isometric pixel sprites, aND THEN I UH……. MADE THE CTHULHU BOYS???? I have no idea what I’m doing but uh for how simple they are IM KINDA REALLY PROUD OF THEM

anyway shoutouts to Adam C Younis’ pixel art videos for the tutorial on isometric characters that I devoured in order to give me the power to attempt this, and lotovik’s twitter for having a ton of inspiring isometric work that probably planted this idea in my head.
